I finally published the new update of Follow the Line 2D Deluxe. This is a bigger update with lots of new features.

  • Remastered UI with new icons, dialogs etc…
  • Gems to collect (everybody likes gems ;))
  • In app shop where you can buy gems or remove the ads

With ads removal integrated in the shop the pro version is now made obsolete and will not be updated anymore!

For the new graphics I hired online a  professional graphic designer. I was a little bit sceptic at first, but the collaboration with the graphic designer was just perfect and I extended the initial deal from just gems and shop icons to remastering the whole UI. I am pretty satisfied with the results and now I have lots of new ideas for new features.

What happened in April

April started pretty normal. The downloads where growing and it seemed as the new “Follow the Line 2” game from the creator of the original game didn’t really affected my downloads. From 1st April to 6th Follow the Line 2D Deluxe had around 8k downloads per day and I was happy. Than on 7th April all started! My daughter was ill, so I stayed at home and had the google analytics realtime statistics open. Around 2 pm I saw an enormous increase in the active users. I had normally on this time of the day on a work day around 300 online users and now there where almost 700! Lots of them where from Italy and that was strange, because my game wasn’t even in the ratings there. This trend continued and in a couple of hours the online users where almost a tausend!

I didn’t know why this is happening, so I tried to find out. The next day it was clear. Google have featured my app in the category “Most Popular Games” in almost 30 countries. Most of the countries where in Europe, so I got lots of downloads from there.

In the next days the downloads continued growing and the concurrent online users with them:

At the end of the month I had 2.3 million new downloads:

and over a million current installs!

Featuring the game on the play store had also some other interesting effects:

  • First of all the iOS downloads went also up:

  • The play store ratings went from 3.73 to 4.1. This was also very nice surprise.
  • One other thing that I wasn’t expecting was the limit of Google Analytics. Apparently in the free version there is a limit of 10 000 000 screen views per month and I crossed this limit somewhere in mid April. After I crossed this limit the statistics got very inaccurate, so I had to look for another solution. I checked out what was the price to switch to Google Analytics Pro, but they have a flat price of $150 000, so I looked for another alternative…
  • And of course some of my other apps got more downloads (you can see the increase in the income from the other apps in the table below).

 

What I did

I concentrated all my effort on Follow the Line 2D Deluxe. There where some complains that the game don’t work on some devices with Lollipop so I upgraded to Unity 5.0 to solve this problem. I also optimized the ads and added some new levels.

I also changed the analytics to Flurry, because of the Google Analytics max screen views per month limit.

I also bought a new Windows 8 phone and started porting the game. The game now runs on Windows phone, but there are lots of other problems that I need to work around. E.g. there is no out of the box leaderboard for Windows phone (like google play game services or game center). Also the Facebook plugin don’t work on Windows. And of course I need to look for some ad networks that I can use there…

 

How did the apps performed

I plan for the future to change the report a little bit. I will publish in more details the app performance and leave the income stats out, so this is maybe the last income report, hence the new name.

What is it to come

I will now concentrate on Follow the Line 2D Deluxe, so my new game will be delayed a bit. There are lots of things that I want to do, like porting it to windows phone, some new levels, some other upgrades etc…

What I did

The iOS marketing campaign of Follow the Line 2D Deluxe is over. I am still not sure if it was worth it, but one thing is for sure – iOS marketing is much more expensive than for the android platform.

There were also some android Lollipop problems with Follow the Line 2D Deluxe, so I ported it to Unity 5. Now everything is looking good 😉

How did the apps performed

Follow the Line 2D Deluxe performed very well. Actually better then that! For some reason the download in Austria skyrocketed and the game got into the top rankings there – 1st place in category “casual”, 4th place in “Games” and 12th place in “Overall”! This made Austria the third biggest income source after Germany and USA.

What is it to come

I started a new android marketing campaign in the UK. I am very curious how the marketing after the first 30 days will affect the game ranking there.

Also the author of the “original” “Follow the Line” game released a second version that is gaining fast lots of downloads (I suppose he is investing lots of money in marketing). It isn’t affecting my downloads for now, but I don’t know if this will change in the future…

Conclusion

Indie mobile game development is definitely worth it and can be a good income source!

How did the apps performed

Follow the Line 2D Deluxe performed very well. The iOS version is still far beyond the android version, but I think that is because I am still learning how the market works.

What I did

I worked on the free iOS version of Follow the Line 2D Deluxe. There are some issues that I need to resolve before I am able to release it, but the most work is finished. I also worked on my new game.

How did the apps performed

Follow the Line 2D Deluxe performed very well. There was a drop in the downloads in the mid January, but they increased again towards the end of the month.

Follow the Line 2D Deluxe makes the most of the money, so I changed the stats to show more details of it and just the sum of the rest.

In the next few days I will submit the free iOS version of Follow the Line 2D Deluxe. I am preparing also a marketing campaign for it.

What I did

This was an exciting month. My new game Follow the Line 2D Deluxe performed very well, especially in the holidays. Most of the time I was busy making some small updates and fixes. I also released the iOS paid version of the game. It was important for me to release the game in the app store before the holidays.

I also started working on a new game.

How did the apps performed

Most of my older apps performed very bad. Even 3D Zombie Ant Smasher Ball performed bad. The biggest surprise on the other hand was one of my oldest games – Moon Racer. The downloads increased dramatically and the profit was the highest for the game ever!

My new game performed also very very good. So far this is by far my best performing game ever. I got all my marketing and assets investments back and even made a profit.

Most of the Sells income is also from Follow the Line 2D Deluxe. I sold over 100 copies of the iOS version of the game! And this was without any iOS marketing! I thing that some of the android publicity had impact on the app store, because the most sells there are also from Germany.

What is it to come

The iOS free version of Follow the Line 2D Deluxe is ready. Before the release I want to gather some more money and prepare a good marketing campaign. The plan is to release it sometime in February.

I will also continue working on my new game.

It’s getting more and more exciting! Now I am more motivated than ever to continue and see how far I can get…

What I did

I received some more advertising ID policy violation warnings from google for some of my older apps. I updated some of them, but for some it wasn’t worth it, so I unpublished them. One of this apps was the free version of my very first android app Tetricorn. I was a little bit sad about it, but it was time to let go. Lately Tetricorn made less than a dollar a month…

I finally released my new game Follow the Line 2D Deluxe for android. I was very exited about this release, because this was the first time I planned a real marketing campaign. This is also my most polished game. I tried to make everything perfect and also hired some professionals for some of the assets.

How did the apps performed

I am pretty satisfied with the results. My new game looks great and the marketing campaign was worth it for sure. The game is still in its first 30 days on the market and it made it in the top 10 in some of the Top New sections on google play. On some days I got more than 2k organic downloads a day! I can say for sure that this is my most successful game yet. I only hope that after the first 30 days the downloads won’t drop drastically!

What is it to come

I am working on the iOS version of my new game Follow the Line 2D Deluxe. I hope to be able to release the paid version before Christmas. For the free version I will need some more time, because I want to prepare a good marketing campaign.

My expectations have been met, so I am happy and I believe that it is still very possible to be successful as a mobile indie developer.
